What is Sports Therapy?

Healthcare that is specifically concerned with the prevention and rehabilitation of injuries

A Sports Therapist is an allied health professional who has the knowledge, skills and ability to:

  • utilize sports and exercise principles to optimise performance, preparation and injury prevention programmes
  • provide the immediate care of injuries and basic life support in a recreational, training, occupational & competitive environment
  • assess, treat, rehabilitate and, where and if appropriate, refer on for specialist advice and intervention.
  • provide appropriate soft tissue interventions in a sport & exercise context
  • plan and implement appropriate rehabilitation and return to training/work programmes

* Note - unlike other professions like Physiotherapy, Chiropractic and Osteopathy, the title 'Sports Therapist' is not protected. This means that anyone can call themselves a Sports Therapist, regardless of their level of training or professional development. Some Sports Therapists are trained to degree level, similar to Physiotherapists etc. but others may have far less intensive and rounded training.
